Serpentine is an alpine stone with special characteristics due to its volcanic origin; as a matter of fact it is a deep alteration of olivine.
Serpentine has the quality, which is shared only by few materials, of having a light colour if the stone is raw, sandblasted or bush-hammered and of becoming dark green when polished or smoothed.

Serpentine has an negligible water absorption, very good resistance to bending stress also after frost, high resistance to atmospheric agents, good formal and aesthetic characteristics of vein and colour, very good ornamental function. There are examples of classic Italian monuments, like Monza Cathedral and S. Andrea Church in Vercelli, where Serpentine has been exposed for more than 8/10 centuries to unfavourable climatic conditions.
